![]() ![]() The bullshit construct of “The Language of the World” came up so many times in the short novella that I could have ended up in hospital if I was playing a drinking game with the phrase. I swear I have Jeremy Iron’s pronunciation of the word ‘Language’ as a ghost haunting my nightmares. Uneducated people like to think of this book as a journey of self-discovery. And given that the book preaches to the reader about the ways of the world, it shows a terrible misogynistic outlook that needs to be crashed very quickly. Women in the book are only there to be love objects who don’t want anything else out of life other than to support the personal journey of the men who claim them. The tone is preachy and obnoxious, promising all men great things if they but look for them and offering up the cult ideology that the universe will provide. His journey to his treasure is less exciting than a drunken ramble with a brick wall. ![]() I’ve had more fun staring into the abyss of my own thoughts, than following him on his quest. I suddenly see where the inspiration for Bella Swan came from. There are so many excellent reviews spelling out just how horrible this sorry excuse for a novel is, so I won’t go into much detail.įirst and foremost, The Alchemist’s main character, the Boy is annoying. ![]() I usually love listening to audiobooks while getting ready for my day, so I never thought that I’d hate the process so much. “ I should listen to some more of that f*ing book,” I’d think to myself with a heaving sigh and a sense of dread while getting ready for work. It’s not often that I give a book a nickname, let alone one along the lines of ‘that f*ing book’, but The Alchemist is a special kind of something. It’s a 4-hour reading, and it took me all month, and honestly, I need at least a year before I ever hear poor Jeremy’s voice again. Jeremy Iron’s narration is without reproach, but there was something about hearing this self-indulgent drivel spoken out loud that really nailed the lid down on the coffin of insufferability. I listened to the audiobook of The Alchemist, and I don’t know if that helped or hindered the process. Is it a ‘grown ass man’ book? Maybe not… but if you still have youth in your heart, it is a must read.“I’m not even going to justify this book with a quote.” If ever you are dissatisfied with what you are doing, or have questions about where you want to be, read it. If you haven’t found your calling, read it. If you have kids, please read it to them. This book will give you the focal point on your quest and a living allegory. The road is long and wrought with challenge, but nothing good is won easily. The lessons here are not a ‘secret’ and certainly not magic. It illuminates the path to actualizing your destiny and achieving the limits of what is possible for you in this life. This story does not ask for you to pay fealty to it, or bow before any alter other than your own Godself. I can only ponder how different the world would be if this was the case. This is the story that everyone should read in their formative years. This is the story that should have been in there. ![]() I never really understood that… Personally I think even old Aesop did a better job than that over-manipulated piece of literature, but that’s another topic. People praise the Bible incessantly for the ‘great stories’ that teach us lessons about life. This is one of the first books that profoundly changed my life for the better. Do Not Read If: You are an alien, a brain in a vat, or an evil demon ![]()
